How many ads per page is best?
The number of ads per page, the bounce rate and the revenue of your webpages are connected.
The natural instinct of the internet marketer is to increase the number of ads per page to the maximum allowed by Google Adsense terms and conditions.
Google Advertising program allows a maximum of three ad units per page. These ads can be combined with a maximum of three ad links per page.
However, Google Adsense warns that putting as much as six ads in a page will result in the
page looking cluttered. Google doesn't tell you what is the best number of ads per page.
Why would you care about a page looking cluttered if it makes more
money than a page with less ads? Well, it won't because
a page full of ads gets web users to hit the Back button and leave your webpages. This leaves little chance for them to click any of your ads.
If a visitor leaves your page within thirty seconds, it is accounted for as a bounce, thus increasing your webpage bounce rate.
The bounce rate is, just like almost anything that happens online, taken into account by Google algorithm.
If the bounce rate of your website increases, then your site's ranking in search engine results will go south.
That's bad news because you will get less visitors from search engines, that's less clics on your ads.
A lot less clics to your ads in fact because
visitors from search engines are usually more likely to clic on ads than any other type of visitors.
How many ads per page is best?
Most successful online ads publishers recommend
only one ad unit per page, located above the fold.
The reason for this has to do with the auction system used by Google to calculate the value of a
clic or cost per clic (CPC).
The less ads on your page means you only publish high CPC ads.
Having less ads on your page means less chance to get clics but higher revenue. It also means less bounce and more traffic from search engines, so overall it makes complete sense to go against the natural instinct of publishing as much ads as possible.
The best way to find out how well this tip works for your site is to test it. Remember however that the increase in traffic may take a couple of weeks to materialize whereas the decrease in ads clicked and the increase in CPC should appear in a matter of days only.
