This payment is a reward for investing in the company through the purchase of shares (stocks).
Dividend payments (amounts and frequency) are decided by the corporation. So when building your portfolio, you need to research the companies to get a feel of what income you will get from your portfolio. To grow a portfolio, one needs to re-invest the dividends into stocks, thus creating more dividends.
